Our Bog
Encompassing 860 acres it is permanently drained with ditches all around the perimeter and every 75 feet throughout its interior. For management purposes the bog is broken up into six areas of differing sizes, according to the best and easiest way to shed water.
The deepest areas of the bog are up to 29 feet deep while the bog averages approximately 14 feet of deposited peat. The total volume of peat remaining in the bog to be harvested is estimated at 20million cubic yards or about 2.5 million bone dry tons. The bog also has a mile long gravel road built across it to make the harvesting and truck loading operations more efficient.
The quality of peat moss varies from area to area according to the size and color of the peat fibers. Many of the areas are of the blonde and long fibered variety which is the most desirable. The annual harvest the peat moss is between 200,000 and 300,000 cubic yards which is governed by the weather. The harvest season normally is from June 1st to September 15th. The dryer the summer, the more peat moss harvested.
