Our peat moss (sphagnum variety) has several properties that make it an invaluable amendment for all types of soil.
Peat alone is sterile: free of contaminants such as weed seeds, insects, and chemicals.
Retention of Water - Peat retains up to 20 times its weight in water and releases it slowly to the vegetation only as the plants need it.
Soil Conditioning - Peat moss is used as a binding agent in loose or sandy soils and aids in retaining nutrients as well as moisture. In heavy soil peat can be used to loosen the consistency and reduce properties of compaction, which in turn allows root penetration of plants.
Peat conditioned soils are easier to use allowing you to apply even amounts.
Aeration Qualities - Peat moss is a unique soil amendment that creates the perfect balance of air and water within the soil.
Lower pH in alkaline soils - Peat has a pH rating of 3.5-4.5 making it a volumetric means of increasing acidity in high alkaline soils.
Composting - Raw compost blended with stable peat moss allows one to control the nutritional qualities at measurable levels. Peat moss is the perfect medium to bulk valuable composted material and also helps to control odors.
Environmental Remediation
Absorption Qualities for Environmental Clean-Up Activities - Peat moss fibers are very porous giving it the ability to absorb oils and petroleum spills.
